The Match Committee has decided to declare the Men's Stroke and Medal Competitions, held on Saturday 5th March, "null and void".
This decision was not taken lightly, and there was much discussion of the various issues involved.
Ultimately, the Rules of Golf dictate that a course cannot be modified after a competition has started (even if the tee markers are incorrectly placed), and that is what occurred with the 18th Tee on this occasion. The Committee has no power to waive the Rules of Golf.
Since this event included a VGL Medal, the VGL were consulted, and they in turn received advice from Golf Victoria.
We are aware that this decision may be viewed with disappointment by some Members, and we apologise for any inconvenience caused.
The Committee are working with Course Management to avoid a regrettable situation like this occurring again.
The Medal event will be rescheduled to 16th July, along with the associated Putting and Eclectic competitions. No prizes will be awarded for the Men's competition from 5th March, but handicapping data entered into GolfLink will remain valid and unchanged.
Since the Women's competition was not affected, it will stand.
