Congratulations to David Foster, who captured the 2015 GFGC Handicap Matchplay Championship with a 5&4 win over Rob Deeth.
It was a tight match over the front nine, with the lead changing several times. Foster's length of the tee was matched by Deeth's consistency and touch around - and on - the greens.
Given the overall result, it was ironic that on the 8th, the only hole where a shot was given by Deeth, he was actually able to win the hole despite a very long drive by Foster. At the turn Foster was 1 up.
It was on the back nine that Foster took control, parring the first five holes to overwhelm Deeth. Foster's length off the tee, and ability to keep his ball on the fairway, made it too great an ask for Deeth in a match played in very good spirit.
Given it was Foster's first experience of matchplay golf, this win might indicate the potential for a regular place in the Pennant team in the future, and no doubt his 14 handicap will be heading lower, given the ball striking ability he displayed. Well done David, Rob, and everyone who took part in the Matchplay Championships.
