Handicap Team
The Handicap Pennant Team made a great start to their season with a first round win at home against Wattle Park on Sunday with 4 wins, 1 half & 3 losses.
It was an exciting finish with Jason Laurie and Luke March in the last group, both 1 down on the last hole to be played (9th hole). We needed one of them to win the last hole to square one game, for the team to win. Luke hit a monster drive down the middle easily clearing the bunkers on the 9th, put his second shot on the green and sank the birdie putt, but his partner put his second shot inches from the hole for a tap in birdie. Jason handled the pressure well, parring and winning the hole after his partner struggled with a GFGC bunker, giving us enough points for the team to win the match.
First time squad member Michael Athanitis dominated with a 5&4 win. Darren Cunningham, Angelo Nisi & Tony Schipano all had convincing wins. Liam Lloyd fought hard right up to the last hole but was denied a result when his partner putted in from off the green.
In summary a great team result and a great start to the season! Next up Dorset Park at their golf course next week.
Scratch Team
The Scratch Team, away at Altona Lakes, scored convincing wins to Aaron Delia (4&3) and Jason Baines in a terrific debut also 4&3. Fighting losses to Warren Hanna 2&1 and Simon Stoker 2&1, and Damien Blythe beaten by a better player on the day 5&4. Aaron Nolan scrapped his way to a half, with a putt to win lipping out on the 18th, and Josh Evers had a great win in his debut, parring the last to win 1up under enormous pressure from their best player.
3.5 to 3.5 with one match left out on the course, but Luke Audley was dormie three down with three to play. He conjured a fantastic birdie from the scrub on the 16th, and also won the 17th to take the match to the last hole. A good drive down the middle, and solid approach to 20ft had him in the box seat, with his opponent missing back right and facing an impossible chip. He managed to get it to about 15ft, Luke's birdie putt slid past but his par was conceded, leaving his opponent with a putt to win the match. He missed, and we tied 4-4.
A great contest played in good spirit, and points away from home is always a good result.
Special thanks to Member Mark McDonald who made the trip out to support and caddie for Aaron Delia. Any Members who are interested are very welcome to come out and support us this Sunday at home, the players really do appreciate it.
