Scratch Team
The Scratch Team remains unbeaten, and on top of the Division 1 Ladder, after another nail-biting win at home on Sunday.
Wayde Barling (5&4) and Jason Baines (4&2) scored excellent wins, while Damien Blythe (6&4) and Warren Hanna (5&4) couldn't overcome strong performances by their opponents. Simon Stoker (2&1) ground out a win, but Aaron Delia also came up against a tough opponent, fighting through until the 17th, where he lost 2&1.
That left the score precariously placed at 3-3, with the last two matches going the distance.
Aaron Nolan had battled all day, his match seeing several swings of momentum, but standing on the 18th tee he was staring down the barrel 1 down. He proceeded to rip his drive straight over the fairway bunker, to leave himself 100m out, then knocked a short iron to 20ft. His opponent couldn't hit the green, ending up on the back fringe in 3. Aaron two-putted for his par, leaving his opponent a difficult downhill putt for the match. He missed, and Aaron secured a gritty, hard-fought, half.
Meanwhile No 1 Josh Evers faced a familiar scenario. Like most of his matches this year, he was playing the last hole with the result on the line, all-square against Altona's best player. His strategic drive down the left opened up his approach angle, and he rifled his iron shot to 15ft. His opponent could only manage a bogey, leaving Josh to two-putt for the win and the match.
As usual Altona Lakes played in excellent spirit, and the results of both home and away matches against them couldn't have been much closer. Thanks again to Clare Lewin and Pam Davey for their prowess behind the BBQ, much appreciated. And also thanks go to Ray Plant and Liam Lloyd for their support out on the course.
The Scratch Team are Away for the final two rounds, at Centenary Park then Lakeside (Albert Park). A win or draw in either, would see us into the Final.
Handicap Team
The Handicap Team lost on the tricky Wattle Park course on Sunday. Trevor Skeoch (2&1) and Tony Schipano (1up) won on the 17th and 18th respectively, while Ryan Rogers secured a half. The other scores were Richard Walpole (9&7), Jason Laurie (2&1), Angelo Nisi (4&2), Tim Lewin (4&3) and Liam Lloyd (4&2).
With two Home matches still to play, Finals are still within reach.
